About this product

What the standard requires

EN 13432 is not a single test but a set of requirements: disintegration, biodegradation, heavy metal limits and the effect on compost quality must all be met.

  • Disintegration: at least 90% passes a 2 mm sieve within 12 weeks
  • Biodegradation: at least 90% converted to carbon dioxide within 6 months
  • Heavy metals and chemical composition below set limits, with no adverse effect on compost quality

FAQ

EN 13432: common questions

Biodegradable only means the material can be broken down by microorganisms, with no timescale or residue standard. EN 13432 is a set of verifiable requirements: disintegration rate, biodegradation rate, heavy metal limits and effect on compost quality all have to pass. The two are not interchangeable.
